- Combat is set at a pace in between the slow, tactical Dragon Age: Origins, and the rapid, action-oriented Dragon Age II.
- Enemies are designed to force the player to examine situations, and have specialized roles that allow them to work together.
- Enemy AI is more sophisticated than ever, allowing them to use player location, cooldown times and remaining health to their advantage.
- There are different types of enemy, for example the "Prowler" type are agile and capable of stealth, but try to avoid head-on conflict and can inflict painful backstabs.
- Enemies no longer just appear out of thin air.
- You can approach combat similarly to in Mass Effect 3- "all combat", "all tactics" or "anywhere between"
- Health no longer recharges at the end of combat, so you need to manage your resources.
- Party members can work together in combat to achieve better results.
